History
Michael Perone, Zach Levow, and founder CEO Dean Drako formed Barracuda Networks in 2003. That same year, the Barracuda Spam and Virus Firewall was unveiled by the business. The firm established an office in Ann Arbour, Michigan, then relocated its headquarters to Campbell, California, in 2007.
It closed the $40 million initial outside investment from Sequoia Capital and Francisco Partners in January 2006.
Trend Micro sued Barracuda Networks on January 29, 2008, alleging that the latter’s usage of the open-source anti-virus programme Clam AntiVirus violated their patent on “anti-virus detection on an SMTP or FTP gateway.” Apart from furnishing instances of previous art to nullify Trend Micro’s patent, Barracuda initiated a countersuit against Trend Micro in July 2008, alleging Trend Micro had infringed upon many antiviral patents that Barracuda Networks had procured from IBM.
The business made its dynamic, proprietary list of known spam servers exposed to the public in December 2008 under the name Barracuda Reputation Block List (BRBL), which may be used for free by anybody to block spam at the gateway. Many IP addresses were banned shortly after BRBL opened, for no obvious reason and with no technical justification.
Over 85,000 clients were served by Barracuda as of October 2009. Barracuda has more than 130,000 clients as of November 2011. Barracuda has more than 150,000 clients globally as of January 2014.
The business started supporting the Garmin-Barracuda UCI ProTour cycling team in 2012 and earned the right to sponsor Bryan Herta Autosport, the 2011 Indianapolis 500 winner, in the IndyCar Series. Alex Tagliani will be defending the team’s championship in the Lotus.
In 2008, Barracuda Networks moved its research and development centre to 12,500 square feet of office space on Depot Street in Ann Arbour. The research division, located in Michigan, has around 180 people by 2012, surpassing its available space once again. Barracuda inked a deal in June 2012 to take over the 45,000 square foot office property on Maynard St. in downtown Ann Arbour, which was once home to Borders.
Resigning from his operational role in July 2012, Dean Drako, who had served as president, CEO, and co-founder of Barracuda Networks from its founding in 2003, remained a member of the board of directors. When Drako left, the company claimed to have reached profitability, grown at a fairly constant pace of thirty percent per year since its founding, had 150,000 global clients, about a thousand staff members, ten offices, and conducted business in eighty countries. As it began its hunt for a new CEO, the business established the CEO’s office.
William “BJ” Jenkins, a seasoned EMC executive, assumed the role of president and CEO in November 2012. After joining EMC in 1998, Jenkins most recently held the position of president of the company’s Backup and Recovery Systems (BRS) Division.
Barracuda Networks debuted as a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange in November 2013, under the ticker code CUDA.
Barracuda Networks entered the North Asian market in March 2015, and TriTech Distribution Limited in Hong Kong handled distribution for the company.
The Barracuda firewall family saw the addition of a new Next Generation Firewall in November 2015.
Barracuda has declared that as of May 2016, its Copy and CudaDrive services would be discontinued.
The $1.6 billion takeover of Barracuda Networks was announced by private equity company Thoma Bravo in November 2017. Thoma Bravo declared in February 2018 that the deal was finished.
Barracuda Networks will be acquired by KKR from Thoma Bravo for around $4 billion, according per the agreement signed in April 2022. The deal was finalised in August of the same year.

Email Security Gateway: Barracuda introduced their plug-in firewall appliance with antiviral and spam protection in October 2003. Barracuda introduced a spam and virus firewall for major businesses and ISPs in June 2008.
Web Security Gateway: The business unveiled their web filtering device in April 2005 with the goal of controlling online browsing and stopping malware and viruses from collecting and sending user data.
Load balancer ADC: The business unveiled a load balancing appliance in November 2006 to distribute network traffic among several servers with high availability.
Message Archiver: To comply with legal and regulatory requirements and to index and preserve emails, the firm launched message archiving in July 2007.
SSL VPN & Remote Access: To provide safe, clientless remote access, the business introduced its secure sockets layer virtual private network solution in November 2008.
Web Application Firewall: Introduced in February 2008, this tool addresses PCI DSS compliance and secures Web applications for major businesses.
Link Balancer is presently End of Life. It was first announced in September 2008 with the goal of optimising and aggregating internet connections from various providers.
Barracuda Backup: The firm launched a cloud-based data backup service in November 2008 that included disaster recovery off-site data replication and on-site backup with data deduplication. Barracuda integrated Barracuda Backup Service with Yosemite Backup, previously Tapeware, in January 2009 by adding message-level backup support for Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise.
online Security Service: In October 2009, Barracuda Networks introduced the Purewire Web Security Service, a software as a service platform for content security, online filtering, and secure surfing on the internet, in connection with its acquisition of Purewire.
NextGen Firewall: Barracuda unveiled their NextGen Firewalls in February 2010 with the goal of safeguarding business network infrastructures. The firewalls combine intrusion prevention, network access control, layer 7 application profiling, online and email filtering, and central management into a single platform that may be used across several dispersed business network sites. NextGen Firewalls can be purchased as a public cloud instance, virtual appliance, or physical device. Wide area network traffic optimisation is a feature of the product.
CudaTel Communication Server (PBX): Barracuda announced the introduction of CudaTel, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) private branch exchange intended for IT managers, in August 2010. Barracuda Networks-sponsored FreeSWITCH is an open-source project available through CudaTel.
In February 2013, Copy.com made its debut as a cloud storage provider. On May 1, 2016, the service was ended.
Barracuda Sentinel: To stop spear phishing and cyber fraud, Barracuda introduced an artificial intelligence solution in June 2017.
The termination of support for Barracuda Mobile Device Manager was declared in December 2017. In 2014, the free service was introduced.
