Eastern Michigan University:- Located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Eastern Michigan institution (EMU, EMich, Eastern Michigan, or just Eastern) is a public research institution. It was the first American normal school formed outside of New England and the fourth normal school (teachers’ college) in the country when it was founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School. The Michigan State Normal School was renamed Michigan State Normal College in 1899 and became the first normal school in the country to provide a four-year curriculum. The institution changed its name to Eastern Michigan University in 1959 after becoming a university.
EMU is categorised as one of the eight research institutions in Michigan’s “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity” category. It is run by an eight-member board of regents, whose members are chosen for eight-year terms by the Michigan Senate and approved by the governor of Michigan.
The College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Services, GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, School of Music & Dance, the Honours College, and the Graduate School are the eight colleges and schools that make up the university. The university’s 800 acres (3.2 km2) of academic and sporting land are home to more than 120 buildings. There are now more over 15,000 students enrolled at EMU.
Eastern Michigan Athletics began play as the “Eagles” in 1991, and the institution formally adopted Swoop, the school mascot, three years later in 1994. The Mid-American Conference of NCAA Division I is home to the Eastern Michigan Eagles. For football, baseball, and basketball, EMU Athletics uses Rynearson Stadium, Oestrike Stadium, and the multipurpose George Gervin GameAbove Centre (previously the EMU Convocation Centre).
History
The state of Michigan established the Michigan State Normal School in 1849, with its campus located in Ypsilanti, after being influenced by such schools in Europe. Municipalities all throughout Michigan engaged in a fierce competition to host the first normal school in the state. Niles, Jackson, and Marshall were among these other rival towns and villages. On March 29, 1853, the school formally began for business with 122 registered pupils. The purpose of American normal schools was to produce competent instructors who would raise the standard of the rapidly expanding common school system.
Adonijah Welch was the first principal of the Normal School and a graduate of the University of Michigan. Later on, he was elected as Iowa State Agricultural College’s (now Iowa State University) first president. He is honoured with Welch Hall, a Georgian Revival-style building at the institution. Welch Hall, which was built in 1895, is the second-oldest structure still standing on the campus and a contributing property to the Eastern Michigan University Historic District.
After creating the first four-year curriculum for a normal school in the US in 1899, the institution changed its name to the Michigan State Normal College. As the top teacher-preparatory institution in Michigan at the start of the 20th century was the Normal College. The school persisted and kept growing even after the First World War, the Great Depression, and the Second World War. Under President Eugene Elliott, the institution changed its name to Eastern Michigan College in 1956. The school’s increased enrolment and programme extension after World War II were the main causes of this.
After founding the Graduate institution, the institution became a university in 1959 and was renamed Eastern Michigan University (graduate courses having been given for two decades, since 1939). The Graduate School, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Technology (now known as GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology) were all legally organised and founded between 1959 and 1980.
International student exchange programmes were established in the early 1970s, one of which involved the British Coventry College of Education (later the University of Warwick). The Honours Programme changed its name to the Eastern Michigan University Honours College in 2005.

More recently, extended programs were added, such as Continuing Education (which includes EMU Online), the Centers for Corporate Training, the World College, and numerous community-focused institutes. Most programs are undergraduate or master’s level, although the university has doctoral programs in Educational Leadership, Technology, and Psychology.
An eight-member Board of Regents oversees Eastern Michigan University in accordance with the state constitution of Michigan from 1964. The governor appoints the Regents, “with the advice and consent of the Senate,” and they are in office for eight years. The university president is chosen by the Regents in turn.
Academics
EMU is regarded by U.S. News & World Report as “selective”. EMU received 17,506 applications for the Class of 2025 (enrolled autumn 2021) and accepted 14,811 (84.6%). 2,312 of those who were admitted enrolled, yielding a 15.6% enrollment rate (the proportion of accepted students who decide to attend the institution). 69% of EMU’s freshmen are retained, and 48% of them graduate in less than six years.
With 2,875 applications for transfer admission submitted and 2,129 approved for fall 2021, EMU’s acceptance rate was 74.1%. With 1,139 enrolling out of those approved, the yield rate was 53.5%. A transfer candidate must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (or above) and have completed a minimum of 12 credits.
The SAT and ACT scores of the enrolled first-year class of 2025 fell within the following middle 50% ranges (25th–75th percentiles): 950–1180 for the SAT and 18–25 for the ACT.
Academic divisions
Bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctorate degrees and programmes are available at Eastern Michigan University. More than 170 graduate programmes and more than 200 undergraduate majors and minors are offered. EMU has eight university sites, including satellite campuses, and six academic divisions. Like a lot of other big colleges, EMU now offers degrees and courses online.
The College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Services, GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, the Honours College, and the Graduate School are the university’s seven colleges and schools. Since 1939, graduate programmes have been provided at Eastern Michigan University. More than two thousand graduate students are enrolled in post-baccalaureate, diploma, master’s, and doctorate programmes at the Graduate School.
The College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) are the university’s two oldest colleges. With 125 academic programmes, the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Michigan University is also the biggest academic college. The majority of the campus’s facilities, including Pray-Harrold, Sherzer Hall, the Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecology Research Facility, the Kresge Environmental Education Centre, and Pease Auditorium, are occupied by the CAS as well.
Since its establishment in 1849, Eastern Michigan University has a long history of producing educators. Since 1991, EMU has taken great pleasure in being one of the nation’s top producers of educators. With its founding in1937, the Department of Special Education at Eastern Michigan University is also one of the nation’s oldest special education programmes.
In 1964, the College of Business (COB) was founded. The goal of building a new College of Business campus on Michigan Avenue in Downtown Ypsilanti in 1991 was to aid in the area’s revitalization. EMU made the decision to relocate the COB back to its Main Campus known in 2020. Boone Hall, which is situated on South Campus next to Cross Street, is the COB’s present residence. The first Ethos Week and Ethos Honour Society in the nation were founded at the College of Business.
